From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Governance is the activity of governing. It relates to decisions that define expectations, grant power, or verify performance. It consists either of a separate process or of a specific part of management or leadership processes. Sometimes people set up a government to administer these processes and systems. In the case of a business or of a non-profit organisation, governance relates to consistent management, cohesive policies, processes and decision-rights for a given area of responsibility. For example, managing at a corporate level might involve evolving policies on privacy, on internal investment, and on the use of data. In terms of distinguishing the term governance from government - "governance" is what a "government" does. It might be a geo-political government (nation-state), a corporate government (business entity), a socio-political government (tribe, family, etc.), or any number of different kinds of government. But governance is the kinetic exercise of management power and policy, while government is the instrument (usually, collective) that does it. The term government is also used more abstractly as a synonym for governance, as in the Canadian motto, "Peace, Order and Good Government". Origin of the wordThe word governance derives from the Greek verb κυβερνάω [kubernáo] which means to steer and was used for the first time in a metaphorical sense by Plato. It then passed on to Latin and then on to many languages. From Wikipedia under the

Is the division of powers between levels of government efficient or inefficient? Asked by Klatelon - Tue Jun 23 10:13:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's both efficient and ineffiecient. Compared to a system like in Britain, the American system is more democratic. The powers are more seperated and the Executive's power is more limited. However, it's difficult to get things done. That's why in Britain we have a better developed welfare system, which has been around a lot longer. Answered by moonchase - Tue Jun 23 10:18:58 2009 How does federalism shape governance in America? Is the division of powers between levels of government effici? Q. Is the division of powers between levels of government efficient or inefficient? Should the national government or the states be more predominant, or is this a false dichotomy given the complexity of government and the intermingling of functions today? Do we need to sort out which level of government should do what?...Someone please help me understand this. Asked by GJ08 - Thu Jun 25 16:13:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. That is what Bush did after 9/11. Different Departments in the Government with duplicate or simular fuctions were not sharing inteligence and in some cases working against each other for a common goal. Just spinning their wheels so to speak. Over time polititians creat departments without understanding what existing department do. From time to time they do need to sort them out.
