Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann, Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It shares a border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. At the time of the 2001 UK Census, its population was 1,685,000, constituting between a quarter and a third of the island's total population and about 3% of the population of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland consists of six of the traditional nine counties of the historic Irish province of Ulster. It was created as a distinct subdivision of the United Kingdom on 3 May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, though its constitutional roots lie in the 1800 Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland. For over 50 years it had its own devolved government and parliament. These institutions were suspended in 1972 and abolished in 1973. Repeated attempts to restore self-government finally resulted in the establishment of the present-day Northern Ireland Executive and Northern Ireland Assembly. The Assembly operates on consociational democracy principles requiring cross-community support. Northern Ireland was for many years the site of a violent and bitter ethno-political conflict ("The Troubles") between those claiming to represent Nationalists, who are predominantly Roman Catholic, and those claiming to represent Unionists, who are predominantly Protestant. Unionists want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, while nationalists wish it to be politically united with the rest of Ireland. In general, Unionists consider themselves British (or "Ulstermen") and Nationalists see themselves as Irish, though these identities are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Since the signing of the "Good Friday Agreement" in 1998, most of the paramilitary groups involved in the Troubles have ceased their armed campaigns. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How can I find out the prices and routes of ferry crossings in the UK from Northern Ireland to Scotland? Q. IS there a website that will show the price and the different leaving points in Northern Ireland for Scotland ? (and be the actual price I would pay there in an actual ticket office)? IF anyone knows offhand the routes and prices, please feel free to just let me know. Thanks! BTW, will be traveling by train from Dublin to Belfast. But I dont necessarily have to cross from Belfast. Any other cities that I can depart from that are cheaper or better? And I am not taking a car. Asked by ?????????? - Fri Aug 31 09:02:34 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Answered by GoreyAlan Failte - Fri Aug 31 09:07:58 2007 Do they stamp your passport when flying from Northern Ireland to England and vice versa? Q. OK first question on here! Firstly, I am not a wanted international criminal or anything like that! I am a New Zealand citizen and just wondering if my passport will get any stamps at Immigration (Northern Ireland or England) flying from Belfast to any part of England return? Many thanks. Asked by kiwiBackpacker - Tue May 12 05:27:40 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. To Neonerd - you do need a passport to fly or a photo driving license, even if it is to the same country. Some anti-terrorist identification law. As you won't be passing through passport control, you won't be getting a stamp. It is only checked at the check-in desk, and at the gate before you board. Although there's a few times I've been to non-EU countries, I haven't received a stamp on my passport anyway. Think the last one I got was '98 in New York and our group had to ask to get the stamp. Answered by James K - Tue May 12 09:30:10 2009 Are there any orpington chicken breeders in northern ireland?
Q. I really want to have chickens, particuarly orpingtons, but i live in northern ireland and most ferries don't allow poultry to be transported across from england to here. I know I can hatch eggs that can be imported from england, but I don't want cockrels. . . . Help!!! Asked by bootyluv67 - Tue Feb 12 15:17:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi there...since I live in the USA I'm unable to answer your question specifically, but thought and wondered if you would be able to personally ask several local poultry breeders (as many as you can meet) where you live to learn if this particular breed can be acquired aside from eggs/cockrels. Perhaps, there must be an agricultural/health reason which prohibits anyone from exporting/importing poultry between the two regions.
