Intelligence is an umbrella term describing a property of the mind including related abilities, such as the capacities for abstract thought, understanding, communication, reasoning, learning, learning from the experience, planning, and problem solving.

Theories of intelligence are two-fold: (i) the “single intelligence” based upon the unilinear construct of “general intelligence”, and (ii) the construct of multiple intelligences. Influenced by his cousin Charles Darwin, Francis Galton was the first scientist to propose a theory of general intelligence; that intelligence is a true, biologically-based mental faculty that can be studied by measuring a person’s reaction times to cognitive tasks. Galton’s research in measuring the head sizes of British scientists and laymen led to the conclusion that head-size is unrelated to a person’s intelligence.

Alfred Binet, and the French school of intelligence, believed intelligence was a median average of dissimilar abilities, not a unitary entity with specific, identifiable properties.

The IQs of a large enough population are calculated so that they conform to a normal distribution.

What are the true signs of intelligence?
Q. To me, your IQ score or your grades in school has little to do with your actual intelligence. I think EQ (your emotional intelligence) is far more important. I know plenty of people with good grades or genius IQs that can't seem to function in normal social settings. They seem to have no clue as to how to interact with people and often come off as extremely rude and self-righteous. I think the best indicator of intelligence is your sense of humor. The abililty to make people laugh (not at you, but with you) is a far better definition of what being intelligent is. Any ideas on this?

A. I would agree with you to some extent, but your really talking about two different intelligences. Some value books smarts. Some value street smarts, common sense, or emotional intelligence as you called it. I would tend to agree with you, that being able to function socially is more important and will take you further in life than a high IQ. But, intelligence tends to be socially defined. So, in certain circles you will get people who encourage books smarts, and in others it will be your emotional intelligence. And then, go to a different country and they may have something completely different that they consider 'intelligence'.

Why is there a huge intelligence gap between man and animal, with respect to evolution?
Q. If evolution is true, shouldn't we seen a wider range of intelligence among humans and (other) animals? Other than one or two extinct species, the closet intelligence to our own is a dolphin, gorilla, or maybe an elephant. Even then, their intelligence is equal to that of ~3 year old child. What is the reason for this?

A. You have some very fascinating answers so far, and I would just like to add this: I remember seeing a documentary once that questioned what was the big difference between humans and other apes that makes us us and them them. As you have no doubt heard, humans and chimps share an incredibly high percentage of their DNA, so all of the differences between us must lie in that small fraction that is not shared. What is the little difference that makes the big difference, in other words. The program seemed to conclude that while we share many social and tool-making characteristics with non-human apes, the tiny thing that separates us is our ability to teach. Chimps can learn by observing, but they don't actively teach each other, and… [cont.]

How can I make a career change to intelligence analysis?
Q. I have 15 years of experience as a technical writer, a BA in International Affairs, and an MA in Art History. I also have some geographic information systems experience, I am a creative problem solver, and I would love the chance to research and analyze intelligence information . I currently have public trust clearance. Is this career transition possible? If so, where's the best place to start? Thanks for your help!
Asked by Melanie - Sat Jan 16 00:06:41 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your experience and knowledge set should qualify you for a position in intelligence analysis. You should only be required to take a small set of specific course work related to this subject. An additional degree shouldn't be required.
