What types of activism is good, and what types of activism is bad?
Q. I always hear so many remarks about liberals and their activism and their opinions, but aren't most of what they do a good thing? Most are for human rights and making the world a better place, what is bad in this?

A. It's funny. "Activist" seems to have become a dirty word. Our founding fathers were "Activists"

How can I make history a meaningful career? How can activism fit in with history?
Q. I really enjoy history and would love to have a more scholarly career. However, it bothers me that a job history doesn't really imply a shaping and changing of the future, while I would like to have a more meaningful effect in working towards positive change. What are your opinions on the relevance of history and how it can be meaningful? Are there are any careers you can think of that would combine history and activism? (I am also not so much interested in studying activism)

Why do some Republicans equate Activism with something bad, when our founding fathers were Activists?
Q. It seems these days that Activism to some Republicans is a bad thing. American Patriots like Thurgood Marshall and Earl Warren, are smeared by some Republicans as Socialist communists Left Wingers. Any Civil Rights associated work is deemed Liberal treachery. Atheist Activism: How can Godless Atheists, Agnostics be more active?
Q. A common question atheists have is how they can make a difference in society. Atheists are not just a minority, but often a despised minority - more people feel comfortable expressing bigotry, hatred, and discrimination towards atheists than any other group. It's safe to say things about atheists that people would never say about others. How can atheists change this? What sorts of activism can they engage in? Is there a place for atheist activists in the world?

A. If you want to see some really big stuff, you're a week too early! There's a Funk the War march on March 19, and a march on the Pentagon on March 21. However, since you're going to be there too early, check around the White House. There's usually always some sort of activism happening on the block of Pennsylvania Avenue right in front of the White House, and there's been an anti-nuclear protest going on for the last 27 years there.

What is the best form of gay rights activism?
Q. There have been so many ways to fight for LGBT rights. The equality march on Washington, for one. Colleges have been holding kiss-ins in which gay couples gather and celebrate a public kiss with their significant other. Movies like Milk and Prayers for Bobby and Brokeback Mountain have furthered LGBT causes. And of course, there are flyers, parades, gay days at amusement parks, and many other events that display and support the gay community. Which one is the best and most effective do you think?

Many people were offended when Barney Frank told those who gathered in DC for the national equality march that they would only be putting "pressure on the grass" but he was partially true. We need to use our system of government to also further our cause. Currently, there is a bill to overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which would be a milestone in gay rights. It needs only 36 more co-sponsors for it to be eligible for a vote in the House. Many Representatives like Nancy Pelosi would certainly co-sponsor the bill if only they had the pressure from our community to do so. Find out if your representative has co-sponsored the bill, if not, meet with them and request… [cont.]

Do you think facebook activism is effective in creating social change?
Q. Give your thoughts, rants, and ideas on the issue. What do you think about facebook and twitter movements that call for social change? Do they work? Do they do anything?

A. Honestly not. Anyone can join a group, but a click isn't as tangible as either an armed revolution, or large peaceful demonstration. Anyone can complain or ask for about things, but creating change takes more than that, it takes action. Examples of action that achieved changes can go from the American Revolution, other nations wars of independence, Poland's solidarity movement, Gandhi in India, among many other things.

What is a better use of money and resources, actually doing charity work or political activism?
Q. The democrats spend Billions donating to candidates, on things like ACORN, Moveon.org, and thousands of other political groups all going after the government to take care of the poor. If that time, money, and other resources were actually spent helping the poor and giving to effective charities, do you think that we would be better off as a country? Basically, If the money spent on political activism were given to those in need and good charities, and the time spent doing the political activism where spent volunteering for charities and helping our neighbors out, would this country be better off?

A. Democrats do not want to help that poor. They want to help themselves. They want to keep the poor poor, and dependent on the government because as the poor dig out of poverty, they begin to vote republican...so if the poor go away, so does the democrat party. Of course they want to keep them poor. Democrats put politics ahead of all else. Also, It is amazing...just like in taxes for entitlement programs, political activists are not spending their own money. They convince the lower middle class dems to contribute the millions that they spend. Dems are great at spending other people's money.

I have to write an essay on it (actually, just any career in communication but that's the vague direction I want to go in with my own career so I figure I'll have to research it sometime) but I can't really figure out where to start. Anything will do, any ideas or even a related wikipedia article or something, just to get me started. I need lots of sources, it's due in four days and I've barely started, so any help would be really appreciated! Thanks.

A. My wife during the last couple of weeks found herself without a job so she used the occasion to hunt for a change of career. She was really stuck until she uncovered the site in the box below which gives tips and tricks on how to choose a career. Now she understands where she's going, and more importantly how to get there.

Q. Thanks.
